Woman stabbed her boyfriend with broken glass after he woke her up

A woman used a shard of broken glass to stab her boyfriend after he woke her up cleaning his flat.

Amanda Bates, 52, was asleep on the man’s sofa when he returned home in July this year, MEN has reported.

Despite asking her to leave the house, the woman refused his request and once he began cleaning up bits of broken glass, Bates had awoken and proceeded to punch him in the face, Manchester Crown Court heard.

The man then pushed her onto the sofa in self defence, but found himself being stabbed in the back by a piece of glass but was thankfully left with no serious injuries.

Bates pleaded guilty to an offence of attempted wounding as she was handed a community order.

Prosecuting, Duncan Wilcock said that while Bates and the man were in a relationship at the time, they were living separately.

Mr Wilcock said: “He began to clean up the broken glass on the floor and the TV was playing.

“Due to the noise, the defendant woke up and it seems she punched the complainant to the nose.”

He then pushed Bates back onto the sofa in self defence which Wilcock said: “At that stage, the defendant grabbed a shard of glass and stabbed the complainant in the back using it."

Bates was subsequently arrested inside the man’s flat after the police were called.

Bates was said to have no previous convictions or cautions and a pre-sentence report on Bates' behalf said that she had remorse for her actions and that she was 'very sorry' for what had transpired.

Sentencing, Judge Patrick Field KC said: “What we have just heard about is pretty disgraceful behaviour, but I do accept what I have heard and what I have read about you – that this was completely out of character for you.

“Until you pleaded guilty, you could hold your head up and say you were a woman of good character – you have lost that as a result of this unpleasant incident.”

Bates was handed a two year community order, 25 days of rehabilitation activity requirements and will have to adhere to an electronically monitored curfew between the hours of 8pm and 6am for a month.
