Who is Wally Funk and is she married?

AMAZON founder Jeff Bezos and three other crew members were launched from a desert site into the edge of space for an 11-minute trip on July 20.

Aboard the Blue Origin, the tech mogul was joined by his brother Mark Bezos, high school graduate Oliver Daemen and an 82-year-old trained astronaut Wally Funk.

Who is Wally Funk and is she married?

Born Mary Wallace "Wally" Funk, the 82-year-old American woman trained to be an astronaut in the 1960s but was never given a chance to fly.

She was the youngest graduate of the Woman in Space Program, a privately-funded project dedicated to finding the best female astronauts in the US.

Later known as Mercury 13, a group of women never got the chance to fly to space, even though they had undergone astronaut training.

She was born in New Mexico in 1939 and said she had had a life-long love of aviation.

She has taught over 3,000 people to fly and has logged a whopping 19,000 flying hours in the process.

Funk has never been married; she's dedicated her life towards her love for aviation.

During an interview with The Guardian, Funk said, “I am married to airplanes.”

Did she join Jeff Bezos on the space flight?

Funk fulfill her life-long dream as part of the crew members aboard the Blue Origin space adventure.

The 82-year-old became the oldest person to ever fly into space.

Bezos and the three crew members lifted off at 9.10am ET (2.10pm UK time) on board Blue Origin's spaceship, New Shepard.

After the successful mission, Bezos told reporters it was a "tiny step in building a rod to space."

“This is a tiny little step of what Blue Origin is going to do. What we’re really trying to do is build reusable space vehicles," the Amazon Billionaire explained.

"It’s the only way to build a road to space, and we need to build a road to space so that our children can build the future.

"If you want to be a space entrepreneur today, you have to do everything from the beginning.

"There’s no real infrastructure that’s at an affordable cost. So that’s what we have to do, is build that kind of infrastructure, and then future generations will get to rest on top of it," Bezos added.

It's the company's first human spaceflight, but it hopes soon to launch commercial flights to space for public members.

What has Jeff Bezos said about her?

On July 1, 2021, the Amazon CEO revealed that the third member of the crew would be aerospace pioneer Funk.

Bezos shared a video of him telling Funk that she will join him on the thrilling mission.

In the two-minute clip, he told her that she had been chosen for the trip as an “honored guest.”

He wrote in the caption: ''No one has waited longer.

''In 1961, Wally Funk was at the top of her class as part of the “Mercury 13” Woman in Space Program.

''Despite completing their training, the program was canceled, and none of the thirteen flew.

''It’s time. Welcome to the crew, Wally. We’re excited to have you fly with us on July 20th as our honored guest.''
