Sex therapist says ‘paedophile’ is a ‘hurtful insult’ and we shouldn’t use it

A sex therapist has urged people to stop using the term "paedophile" because it is a "hurtful insult".

Miranda Galbreath, a licensed professional counsellor and sex therapist in Pennsylvania, US, said people have been making incorrect assumptions about people who are sexually attracted to children.

She suggested a safer term — minor-attracted persons (MAPs) — in a bid to "clear up misconceptions that create harm for an already marginalised population".

The expert explained in a YouTube video: "I'm doing this because the term 'paedophile' has moved from being a diagnostic label to being a judgmental, hurtful insult that we hurl at people in order to harm them or slander them.

"Let's talk about who a minor-attracted person is or who they are.

"This term simply means that the person has an enduring sexual or romantic attraction to minors."

She said child sex offenders "don't get to choose their attraction" and compared the concept to people's sexual orientation and emphasising that "attraction does not equal action".

Miranda repeatedly used the word "attract" to further explain who MAPs are.

"Some minor-attracted persons are attracted to a specific age range of minors while some are exclusively attracted to minors and are not attracted to adults at all," she said

"Some are also attracted to adults.

"Most people who sexually victimise children actually are primarily attracted to adults – they simply choose to victimise a child or children because children are readily available and they trust adults."

Her video has sparked backlashes in the comments as viewers said it's not okay to normalise paedophilia.

One said: "This is disgusting. Normalizing 'non-offensive' terms, is leading to normalizing pedophilia. We can never let this happen and I'm disgusted that you're in our city."

"Stop making excuses for the evil that is perpetuated on innocent children! This makes me sick! They know what they are doing!" a second wrote.

Miranda defended herself and said her goal is to "recognise that people who have those attractions are our fellow human beings, and to clear up some myths about them, including the belief that they always act on those attractions".
