"Against all odds, doom and gloom, Ukraine didn't fall, Ukraine is alive and kicking," he continued.

Having been invited to the White House by Biden, Zelensky was adamant that Ukraine "will never surrender" and urged those around the world that the war, which has been ongoing for 10 months and led to thousands of deaths, is one that cannot go unnoticed.

"This battle cannot be ignored, hoping that the ocean or something else will provide protection," he said.

He added: "Our two nations are allies in this battle and next year will be a turning point, I know it."

Biden demonstrated the closeness between the US and Ukraine by announcing a $1.8billion (£1.5billion) military aid package for Ukraine, including Patriot surface-to-air missiles.

Zelensky said the support shown by the US has allowed to him to make the trip abroad for the first time in 10 months, saying the "situation is under control, because of your support".

He told Congress that: "Your money is not charity, It's an investment in the global security and democracy that we handle in the most responsible way."
