‘Mysterious big cat scared life out of me from 10 meters away’ before fleeing

A member of the public who claims to have spotted a 'puma' near a Welsh town earlier this week says the big black cat "scared the life" out of him as he took a walk near fields behind his house.

Brenden, who recalled the incident to Puma Watch North Wales, isn't the only resident from the town of Denbigh to report such a sighting in the past few days.

For another man – Graham Evans – also said he spotted the animal and even managed to snap it on camera in the distance before it fled.

Speaking to Puma Watch North Wales, Brenden described how he came within close proximity to the beast on Monday morning (January 16).

He said: "Walked behind my house to dispose of some wastewater near the field behind my property and I spooked something big and black that bolted away from me causing the undergrowth to rustle.

"The noise made me look in the direction of the noise and what I seen was far too big to be a domestic cat and it had reared onto its back legs to pivot and run.

"I’m a former gamekeeper and know it wasn’t a fox or badger, it was far too big, leapt away rather than running. Scared the life out of me, I was around 10 metres from it."

Separately, Graham said he was walking in fields behind Denbigh Castle last week when he experienced his own encounter.

He claimed to have seen the cat on January 12 drinking from a nearby cattle trough.

He explained: "I was alone on a walk in the fields behind Denbigh Castle when I first spotted the animal. It was some distance away and appeared to be drinking from a cattle water trough.

"It then jumped down, walked several feet from the trough then crouched down very low in the grass. It must have spotted me.

"When I am out and about I always carry a small compact camera. I just managed to take a photo before it sprang up then jumped over a fence into the next field then ran away into the distance very fast then disappeared."

Also this week a third member of the public reported finding pawprints near Pontybodkin – some 18 miles away from Denbigh.

Chris Hughes was cutting up wood on Tuesday (January 17) when he noticed the prints, which he snapped alongside a matchbox for size comparison.

You have to go back as far as 2011 for the first recorded sighting of a possible puma in Denbigh.

According to The Daily Post, police were called in when "a big cat the size of a sheepdog" was spotted 12 years ago.

The animal was described as "silver and black in colour and had a black stripe wider than a domestic cat".

It came just a week after police were called to a barn in nearby Ruthin where a dead lamb had been suspiciously stripped to the carcass overnight.
