Huge fire rips through school as students flee from ‘collapsing roof’

More than 40 firefighters were battling a "severe" fire that was ripping through a school this afternoon forcing staff and pupils to flee.

The fire tore through Peebles High School in the Scottish Borders after breaking out at around 1pm today.

Reports online suggested pupils were sent fleeing from a collapsing roof as the blaze took hold at lunchtime.

The roof of the school's art department reportedly caved in as the fire continued to spread.

All pupils and staff have been accounted for and are safe, the school has said.
