Paris is furious about the new AUKUS alliance between Australia, Britain and America. As part of the agreement, Australia scrapped a £45bn contract for French submarines, and will instead work with the UK and US to build its own nuclear vessels.
This caused outrage in Paris, with France withdrawing its ambassadors to the US and Australia.
The AUKUS agreement, and American withdrawal from Afghanistan, have intensified the debate within Europe over whether the EU should have its own armed forces.
Sandro Gozi, an MEP for Mr Macron’s party, suggested France could give up its permanent UN Security Council seat in return for a European military. Such a possibility has since been denied by the French government.
He said: “I think that if we move on these things we can put on the table also the discussion on the Security Council.”
Following Brexit, France is the only remaining EU member with a permanent Security Council seat.
The other members are the US, UK, Russia and China.
However Express.co.uk readers hit out at Mr Macron, suggesting he could lose his position in next year’s French presidential elections.
Bigalmckay wrote: “People should realise just how vulnerable Macron is to any candidate who can mount a credible challenge.
“I’ve lived in France for six years and I can tell you, the French loathe him. Me too.”
I-smith added: “He’s looking for his next job…”
L W D said: “The only thing Macron will be giving up any time soon will be his job.”
Other readers argued talk of an EU army strengthens the arguments for Brexit.

NotInEU2 commented: “There isn’t going to be an EU army. The 2016 remain campaign repeated it many times.
“What a good job the electorate saw through their lies.
“Farage was demonised for telling the truth.”
AnglosphereStrikesBack added: “Poor France, being in the EU means they aren’t even a real country anymore.”
On Wednesday, France announced it will return its ambassador to the US, after Mr Macron spoke on the phone with Joe Biden.
The two leaders issued a joint statement, agreeing France should have been better consulted about the AUKUS alliance.
It said: “The two leaders agreed that the situation would have benefited from open consultations among allies on matters of strategic interest to France and our European partners.
“President Biden conveyed his ongoing commitment in that regard.
“The two leaders have decided to open a process of in-depth consultations, aimed at creating the conditions for ensuring confidence and proposing concrete measures toward common objectives.
“President Biden reaffirms the strategic importance of French and European engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.”
