For the first time in three years, the Doomsday Clock has recalibrated and put the world at a terrifying 90 seconds to midnight.

This is the closest to total catastrophe we have ever been, according to the clock and it is largely thought to be due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Midnight represents the hour of the apocalypse, and for the last three years, the world has been sitting at what now seems like a comfy 100 seconds away.

Now though, things seem to be heating up and Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine appears to be a leading factor, the Mirror reports.

The Clock's job is to tell us how close we are to a worldwide disaster of man-made origin.

It first started its count in 1947, a visual representation of our proximity to apocalypse from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

It says the clock is there to remind us all, "of the perils we must address if we are to survive on the planet," as it ticks backwards and forwards, or closer and further to the end of the world.

Rachel Bronson, chief executive of the bulletin, told the Washington Post: "What we’ve been looking at is the unravelling of the international order… when two countries that control the largest nuclear arsenals in the world are at odds.

"And what we’re trying to say [is] that we really need to find a way to contain this crisis.”

The best the clock has ever done, and the furthest we have ever been from catastrophe in its eyes is 17 minutes to midnight, which came in 1991, the year the Soviet Union broke up and Cold War is considered to have come to an end.
