Dad who dismissed Covid as ‘the flu’ left ‘humbled’ after daughter, 7, fell ill

A coronavirus-denying dad has been left “humbled” after his daughter fell seriously ill and was left with a swollen heart.

Andrew Maurer, of Herriman, Utah in the US, says he used to dismiss Covid-19 as “just the flu” and denied masks were effective.

But his approach changed after seven-year-old Grace was diagnosed with the Covid-associated condition Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).

MIS-C, which causes severe inflammation of organs and can be fatal, has been compared to the existing inflammatory condition Kawasaki Syndrome.

She fell sick in November and medics say it has left her with a swollen heart, Metro Online reports.

Her dad said: “I used to be on the whole page of masks don’t do anything, this is just the flu. Kids don’t get sick from Covid.

“And I gotta tell ya – I’ve been completely humbled.”

He said the scary part was that her family still didn't know how it is going to affect her.

The youngster would scream in pain and her eyes started bulging, her family said.

Her mum Caitlin said she seemed completely out of it.

She said: “If you would barely touch her, she would scream in pain. And then her eyes starting bulging.”

At first her symptoms she had a severe favour and laboured breathing.

Staff at an urgent care centre diagnosed a possible kidney infection, but her condition became worse and she was taken to an intensive care unit.

Although she tested negative for the virus after going to hospital, doctors say she had suffered an earlier asymptomatic infection which triggered MIS-C.

The youngster also contracted meningitis in hospital, according to US reports.

She has since returned to school, but medics said they are worried about damage to her heart.

Her parents have been told not to let her carry out any strenuous physical activity.
