Charles could offer Harry and Meghan titles in ‘extraordinary olive branch’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could be offered royal titles for their children Archie and Lilibet as King Charles seeks to repair the relationship with his exiled son, an author has claimed.

The matter of royal titles has been an issue of conflict between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Royal Family since their acrimonious exit, with Harry arguing that he is still entitled to royal protection in the UK despite losing his HRH status.

After the Queen’s death last month, the Sussexes’ children Archie and Lilibet were automatically given the titles of prince and princess due to royal convention.

But, with Harry and Meghan still isolated from the royals in the US, royal author Katie Nicholl has suggested that Charles may use the offer of titles to attempt to heal the reported rift.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen about the Duke of Edinburgh title, and we don’t know whether he’s going to give it to Archie and Lilibet,” she said, speaking on the Palace Confidential podcast.

“It would be the most extraordinary olive branch and act of reconciliation if he did, but I think if that happens, it’s going to come with a caveat, he’s going to insist that Harry and Meghan are respectful of the institution, if indeed they’re taking the titles of the institution.”

But, after Harry and Meghan dropped their HRH titles following their royal exit, Katie suggested that she had received mixed messages from the couple’s camp about what titles they wanted their children to hold.

“Initially, I remember very clearly being briefed by their camp that they wanted them to be Mr and Miss, and that was what they wanted as part of them having as low-key an existence as they could given who they were,” she claimed.

“I think most people totally understood why Harry and Meghan didn’t want it, and are now quite confused as to why the issues of prince and princess are important.

“Is it because it’s important for their new careers? They wouldn’t get the HRH [titles] anyway because Harry and Meghan can’t, but prince and princess is going to carry a lot more weight in America with what they do.

“And, it’s the title that is owed to Harry and his children because he's the son of the sovereign, and the rules at the moment are that the sons of the sovereign's children will also take that title.”

While spending an extended time in the UK mourning the Queen’s death with the Royal Family, Harry and Meghan reunited with Prince William and Kate Middleton during a walkabout.

The prince was not spotted publicly interacting with his father, and Katie suggested that the trust may have been lost by the pair after their recent estrangement.

She continued: “It will be very interesting to see what the King does and whether he uses that as a final conciliatory move to bring Harry and Meghan back in.

“I think so much of it comes down to a matter of trust, and there is a great sense that the bond of trust has been broken by the couple.”
