Arrest made in Westminster fatal hit-and-run of pedestrian

Police in Westminster arrested a suspect Wednesday in a fatal hit-and-run crash and a tip from the public led to the arrest.

Erik Bryant Alvarenga is being investigated for hit-and-run, vehicular homicide – reckless and failure to remain at the scene of collision, according to a police news release. He was being held at the Adams County Jail on Wednesday.

The fatal crash, involving a pedestrian, happened at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at West 70th Avenue and Federal Boulevard, police said. A man was walking west on 70th when he was hit by the driver of a vehicle going south on Federal. The driver failed to stop.

On Wednesday, police were notified by a tipster about a possible suspect vehicle. The reporting party, who had seen a Facebook post by police about the incident, led investigators to the area of West 96th Avenue and Elm Street.

“Based on damage to the car, detectives believed this was in fact the vehicle involved in the crash,” police said.

Detectives contacted Alvarenga, the registered owner of the car, and he was arrested, the release said. Excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the case. The victim was not identified Wednesday.
