Yellowstone: Kayce and Monica clash over his job
Viewers are still waiting for the fourth season of Yellowstone to return on Paramount, but eager fans were in for a surprise when they tuned into the Sunday Super Bowl on CBS. Upcoming prequel Y:1883 is set to air exclusively on Paramount Plus, and a short trailer has given fans their first look at the new spin-off.
A brief teaser trailer shown during Sunday night’s Super Bowl has confirmed Yellowstone will soon return with a new prequel series, Y:1883.
The new spin-off will trace the lineage of the Dutton family 200 years before the events of the flagship Western series.
Led by Kevin Costner as John Dutton, showrunner Taylor Sheridan has thrilled viewers throughout three seasons of the modern Western drama so far.
After inking a new deal with Paramount, Sheridan is set to produce even more content for the Paramount Network’s new streaming service, with Y:1883 potentially being the first of many scripted series under his name.

Some fans were let down by the Super Bowl’s tiny glimpse at the new series, though many only learned the news when the trailer aired during the game.
The ten-second clip promises to bring viewers the origins of Yellowstone as the camera zooms through a snowstorm to focus on a wind-battered wooden sign adorned with the show’s logo.
An ominous voiceover says: “I don’t care if you live or die, but should you live, you tell them about me.”
A synopsis reads: “Y: 1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America.
“It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land.”
It is currently unknown who will be joining the cast, though fans could expect a major star to headline the new prequel.
Yellowstone’s mainline series already has Hollywood legend Kevin Costner at the centre, and the Paramount series became more popular than ever with the start of its third season last year.
An impressive 6.5 million viewers tuned in to the season opener, and Paramount could expect an even larger audience following season three’s dramatic cliffhanger.

Some Super Bowl viewers were disappointed by the brief advertisement, considering what was perceived as a lacklustre campaign from Paramount to showcase its new streaming service.
One Twitter user wrote: “Weird to me to promo Paramount’s streaming service and not lean into the great Yellowstone.”
Nevertheless, the news of an upcoming prequel was met with celebratory reactions from fans of Taylor Sheridan’s hard-hitting Western series.
Another viewer said: “The only Super Bowl ad I cared about was that brief preview for a Yellowstone spinoff. Giddy up boys.”
And one more wrote: “Yellowstone origin series coming this year?! That may have been the best teaser commercial of the Super Bowl!”
No release date has been set by Paramount so far, but given this week’s announcement viewers shouldn’t expect the new prequel to premiere until 2022 at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Yellowstone season four is currently filming in Montana and is hoped to maintain the show’s traditional release window over the summer.
Yellowstone will return with season 4 in 2021 on Paramount.
