The Masked Singer: Why did Gabrielle nearly quit The Masked Singer?

The Masked Singer: Harlequin revealed to be Gabrielle

The Masked Singer semi-final on ITV saw two celebrities reveal their identities. British icon Gabrielle was revealed as the mesmerising Harlequin. The star has opened up about her initial fears of going on the quirky show.

The Masked Singer final is just around the corner with only three celebrities left, all battling for the winning spot.

The semi-final saw comedian Sue Perkins revealed as Dragon and iconic singer Gabrielle as Harlequin.

Four out of the five panellists guessed her identity correctly, saying her distinctive voice gave her away.

Fans were also adamant Gabrielle was behind the mask, and they were thrilled to see her perform without the mask on at the end of the show.

The star spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk and other media, admitting she very nearly bailed after the first week of filming.

She said on the first day of filming she had not had the opportunity to practise singing with the mask on.

She added: “I nearly died. Nobody prepares you for the weight of that thing, nobody prepares you for the closed face.

“I had panic attacks, I was hot. Just the fact of having to sing in a mask, this heavy mask that required two people to put on my head

“I said I’m not doing this, I’m going home. I’m not even joking. I don’t think they have someone on standby if you choose not to do the show.

“That would have been pretty unprecedented but I didn’t care. There were a million emotions I was going through at the time.”

Her vocal coach managed to persuade her to pursue the journey as they had come so far together.

She had spent time rehearsing her songs at home and her coach had worked hard to train her to disguise her real singing voice.

She said: “He was like talking me off a ledge. When the mask was on I could [only] see down the nostrils.

“It was crazy, they had to keep adjusting it.” The singer did say she was grateful for the fact “everyone was bending over backwards to keep [me] in the show”.

She admitted to having a “massive strop” but was glad she did not “run off in the beginning”.

She said: “It was a lot at the time, I was so close to not being on the show.”

The star was due to perform at shows throughout the summer and winter, all of which had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She agreed to take part in the unique series as it was a new opportunity she did not want to pass up.

The singer impressed the panel and audience from her first performance and they immediately recognised her to be a professional vocalist.

Other names thrown into the mix included Tracy Chapman and Des’ree.

The renowned star said she was surprised to see so many people had guessed her real identity.

She said: “I never realised that, I was deluded. I thought I had it in the bag. I thought I did a great job, I thought they are never going to get it.”

The singer-songwriter has had huge hits with Sunshine, Dreams and Out of Reach.

One of her biggest albums was Rise in 1999 and her voice became one of the most iconic in the country.
