Earlier this year, Joe Lycett decided to step down as host of The Great British Sewing Bee. The comedian took over the presenting role from Claudia Winkleman in 2019. However, in September 2021 it was announced that Sara Pascoe would present from season eight.

The Great British Sewing Bee is a much-loved BBC competition series following some of the most talented amateur sewers.

The reality series started airing back in 2013 and it acts as a spin-off to the original Great British Bake Off.

However, on Wednesday night, fans noticed that Joe had been replaced by Sara, who made her debut on the first of two Christmas specials.

The presenter welcomed four new celebrities to take on a number of sewing challenges.

Gogglebox vicar Kate Bottley, Anneka Rice, Ghosts star Kiell Smith-Bynoe and former Coronation actor Antony Cotton all went head-to-head as they were put under pressure during the tasks.

Sara was also joined by judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young, who were on hand to give their critique.

In a comedy skit at the beginning of the show, Esme and Patrick welcomed Sara to the show.

“What we need is a new presenter,” Esme began.

Patrick continued: “We lost our old one.”

Sara, who was dressed up as Father Christmas, whipped off her hat and beard and replied: “I’ll do it!”

However, just minutes into the programme, viewers were left unimpressed by the shake-up in presenters.

Many took to social media to share their thoughts on the change.

J penned: “Giving it a go with the new presenter.”

Jason raged: “Really looking forward to the Sewing Bee tonight but gutted that the legend that is @joelycett is not on it.”

Susan tweeted: “Watching the #SewingBee #CelebrityChristmasSpecial. Going to miss Joe Lycett not presenting it anymore but it will always be lovely to see Esme and Patrick on our TV screens.”

While Debbie added: “Love #SewingBee and idm Sara not 100% about them together. I loved Joe.” (sic)

Benji quizzed: “Why didn’t I know Joe Lycett had left #SewingBee?! I’m not a fan of Sara Pascoe as a comedian but will give it a chance.”

Darren simply wrote: “Where are you??”

Fans may have missed seeing Joe on their screens, but some viewers loved to see Sara present the show.

Roz tweeted: “I miss Joe a bit, but already enjoying Sara Pascoe on #SewingBee.”

Alice praised: “B****y love Sara Pascoe #SewingBee.”

A Great British Sewing Bee is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
