Ever since the BBC staple first aired in 2004, rumours have been rife about a “Strictly Come Dancing curse”, which claims contestants taking part on the show are at risk of their relationship falling apart due to the closeness involved in the dance pairings. This year, two couples hit the rumour mill. Adam Peaty and Katya Jones, who left last week, made headlines following a steamy dance, while speculation continues as to whether AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington have become an item. Former professional AJ AJ Pritchard, 26, gave his view on the subject as he spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk.

Talking about AJ, 33 and Kai, 26, Pritchard commented: “I think they’re both single so hey, why not?

“There’s no Strictly curse if they’re both single, that’s what I’ve always said, so go for it!”

It comes as fans continue to note a “spark” between the presented and the dancer.

During their week four performance, many picked up on the fact that the two appeared to “almost kiss”.

After another dance, Kai could be heard telling AJ: “I love you, I love you so much.”

An insider reportedly confirmed a romance between the two, commenting: “Kai thinks AJ is sexy.

“They have this lovely romance going on, things have definitely changed in the last week or so and they are inseparable, not just as dance partners but away from that, too.

“It’s nice to see a Strictly romance where there is no curse, just two people who have fallen head over heels for each other.

Speaking to Mail on Sunday, they continued: “Those involved in the show have been watching this closely over the weeks and have thought this was always on the cards. It’s lovely.”

One of the most notorious examples of “The Strictly Curse” came from the 2018 series, in which comedian Seann Walsh was photographed kissing his dance partner Katya Jones.

At the time, the 32-year-old was married to fellow dancer Neil Jones, and Seann was with actress Rebecca Humphries.

In the same year, TV presenter and Strictly winner Stacey Dooley entered a relationship with her dance partner Kevin Clifton.

She had been in a relationship while on the show but did not start a romance with Kevin until after the series.

While AJ and Kai are both single, viewers also called out Adam and Katya during one of their performances, which saw them lean in close together as the dance ended.

Adam hit back at the kiss claims on a Twitter post days later.

He wrote: “My favourite dance so far.

“Thank you to everyone who has sent supporting messages! I loved it.

“To everyone who wants to see what they want, your comments have real-life consequences.

“I will not be overcome or lowered by your gossip.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday on BBC One at 6.45pm.

AJ Pritchard was speaking to Express.co.uk in conjunction with William Hill.
