Former Home Secretary Jacqui stunned Strictly Come Dancing fans when she signed up to appear on the upcoming 2020 series. She explained she was “speechless” when approached to be part of the BBC dancing competition and couldn’t wait to “throw myself into the challenge”. However, it seems she could be the first to be voted off the show as she is far from favourite to win.

Speaking about taking part on the show, the Rt Hon Jaqui Smith said: “I was speechless with excitement at being asked to join Strictly – and that’s very rare for me.

“Fifty years ago, I got a bronze medal for Scottish Highland Dancing and it feels about time to return to dancing.

“I couldn’t be in better hands with the Strictly team and I’m going to throw myself into the challenge. Watch out!”

However, it seems viewers don’t have much faith in her performing well.

It has been revealed by bookmakers Ladbrokes only two bets have been placed on her lifting the coveted Glitterball Trophy.

Unlike fellow politician Ed Balls, Jaqui has failed to connect with punters and she’s an outsider to win with odds of 50/1.

However, at the other end, EastEnders actress Maisie Smith remains the favourite to win with odds of 2/1.

Jessica O’Reilly of Ladbrokes said: “Jacqui could well be the first celebrity sent packing, but the odds now suggest Caroline could be the dark horse of the series this year.”

It comes after former Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott revealed she had been approached to take part.

She explained: “I turned them down. I couldn’t possibly do it. I think Jacqui’s very brave.”

Appearing on Sophie Ridge On Sunday, Diane went on to detail why a turn on the dance floor wouldn’t be for her.

“You’ll be surprised to know I’m not someone with natural rhythm and I didn’t want it exposed to millions of television viewers,” she said.

Jacqui however, feels very differently about hitting the dance floor as she detailed her excitement to embrace the fake tan when she was announced to be taking part on Steve Wright’s Radio 2 show.

“Who doesn’t want a fake tan that isn’t all streaky like when you put it on yourself?” she exclaimed.

“When they asked me to do it I was speechless with excitement, which is pretty unusual for me.

“I’ve been doing some extra running and yoga to make sure it’s not too much of a body shock.”

Meanwhile, judge Craig Revel Horwood has revealed he thinks Bill Bailey will be “terrible”.

He told The Sun: “I’m looking forward to the disasters!”

Craig doesn’t have high hopes for Olympian Nicola Adams either, adding: “I think Nicola Adams will be punching above her weight, darling.

“But I am looking forward to seeing a same sex couple. That’s going to be cool.”
