Shetland returned last month, more than two years since the BBC One drama aired its series five finale. DI Jimmy Perez (played by Douglas Henshall) and his team are back, trying to get to the bottom of another mysterious murder investigation. With season six coming to a close on Wednesday, November 24, fans are already asking about what lies in store for the future of Shetland.

Shetland returned on Wednesday, October 20, for the premiere of season six.
In this latest series, the focus has been on the team trying to find out who murdered prominent local figure Alex Galbraith who was shot dead on his front doorstep in the middle of the day.
Alex had a number of enemies so it has been anyone’s guess who could have been the one to pull the trigger.
But following the fifth episode, fans have grown concerned for Duncan (Mark Bonnar).
Jimmy warned that Donna (Fiona Bell) was out to get him but he didn’t listen.
Donna told Duncan she no longer wanted to live and so asked for him to post a letter to her solicitor and then return to help her die by suicide.
Fans started to think this was all part of her plan to get revenge with the letter actually informing her solicitor that Duncan would have something to do with her being killed.
One viewer tweeted: “Donna’s revenge from beyond the grave on Duncan was that letter.”
While another commented: “Donna is going to leave everything to Duncan then make it look like he killed her? Duncan should have listened to Jimmy.”
But how will season six end and will it tee up a seventh run?
Will there be another series of Shetland?
Fans were unsure whether or not the drama would be returning for a sixth series and so were relieved when it did.
But now they are wondering what will be the fate of Shetland as series six is done and dusted with.
Luckily, there is no need to wait to find out about the BBC One drama’s future.
Shetland, which is based on the books by author Ann Cleeves, will return for series seven.

Following the end of season five, Shetland was given a double renewal in December 2019.
The original plan was for the series to be released in 2020 and 2021 but this changed thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
A release date hasn’t yet been announced for the seventh series of Shetland.
But actor Douglas Henshall has given fans an exciting update.
The DI Perez star confirmed filming on Shetland had finished on October 7.
He tweeted: “We are wrapped on Shetland.
“Production now moves to Glasgow for the rest of season seven.
“As ever thank you to the people here for your help, support and patience we couldn’t do it without you.”
Shetland is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
