Outlander theories: Did Jamie try to follow Claire to the future after surviving Culloden?

Outlander: Jamie sees Claire in vision he has after battle

One of the most heartbreaking scenes in Outlander’s history was when Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) sent Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) back to her own time. He did this to keep her safe after he was sure he would be killed during the Battle of Culloden. However, some might be wondering if he ever tried to get to her after he survived.

Did Jamie ever try to follow Claire to the future?

In season two of Outlander, fans were left devastated when Jamie and Claire were forced apart by circumstance.

Viewers will remember how Claire had fallen pregnant once again following her devastating miscarriage.

However, the Battle of Culloden was fast approaching and Jamie was sure he would die in the battle.

In order to keep her and his child safe, Jamie sent Claire through the stones and back to Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies).

After this, the pair were separated from each other for almost two decades before Claire returned to the past.

However, this may have left fans wondering if Jamie ever attempted to travel forward to be with the love of his life.

This is especially confusing as he would surely want to reunite with her after he managed to survive Culloden.

Posting on the Outlander fandom, one user questioned why this never happened in the series.

They wrote: “I have been wondering this all of season three – when Jamie survived and was miserable because he was without Claire, why couldn’t he have travelled through the stones?

“He knew where she was the whole time and could have gone to her and said he survived.

“Or even after [he] the prison when he went to look for her on that little island, why didn’t he just go through the stones?

The main explanation of why Jamie is unlikely to have done this is because so far it seems his character is unable to travel to the future.

This is because he does not possess the time-travel gene which characters like Claire and Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) have.

Fans will remember in season two, episode 13, he tries to touch the stones but nothing happens.

He also does not hear the trademark buzzing, which indicates he would be able to pass through them.

This was confirmed by actor Caitriona Balfe when she appeared on This Morning back in 2017.

She was asked by presenter Holly Willoughby whether Jamie would be able to time-travel with her.

Balfe replied: “There are certain people and it can be passed down through generations. But, certain people can’t.”

There is likely to be more time travel ahead when the series returns for its sixth season as well.

This has been commissioned by Starz and is hoped to start filming in early 2021.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
