Before Daniel Craig became James Bond, Pierce Brosnan bagged the role, debuting in 1995’s GoldenEye. And now unearthed reactions to the then-new 007 have seen Idris Elba spotted giving his take on the film. At the end of the clip, the future Hollywood star chimed in with his friend.

Referring to Timothy Dalton, his friend said: “Better than the last one.”

Before a 23-year-old Elba said of Brosnan: “He’s got the charm and he’s got all the looks, y’know what I mean?

“And he’s fit, he’s strong and blah, blah, blah. Yeah he’s alright, he’s alright.”

An undiscovered actor at the time, today the 49-year-old is one of the bookies’ favourites to be the next Bond.

Elba’s best odds of replacing Daniel Craig as Bond after No Time To Die are at 4-1.

Although with the star turning 50 this year and the incumbent being 53 might mean he’s too old now to play 007 now.

Whatever the case, Elba’s certainly had his fun with the speculation surrounding him being a potential future Bond.

At the 2019 Golden Globes, he sat next to Craig and shared a selfie with him captioned: “Awks…..”

Speaking with Event magazine afterwards, Elba was asked if he was teasing taking over the role.

He said: “Nah, we just did it on the spur of the moment, thought it would be a laugh. It was a selfie. Didn’t realise it would be picture of the year.”

While on why he doesn’t think playing Bond is for him, the star added: “Bond is one of the biggest franchises in the world, and for that reason, whoever ends up playing it, lives it.

“You’re THAT character, and known as that character for many, many years. I’m creating characters now that can still live alongside Idris. Not ones that take over me and solely define me.”

Interestingly, Brosnan himself has backed Elba to be the next Bond after Craig.

Speaking with People, the 68-year-old said: “Idris Elba comes to mind. Idris is such a powerful presence and such a great former voice tensity. He would be magnificent.

Brosnan went on to star in three more Bond movies in Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day.

Meanwhile, No Time To Die hits UK cinemas on September 30, 2021.
