Just 25 minutes into the finale of the biggest drama on TV, Line of Duty, the need to get answers was at fever-pitch. At points, viewers were asking themselves: “Am I H?”

Fans and the stars of the show have been sharing their theories in the lead up to the final episode.

Finally, the corruption-busting trio of Kate, Steve and the Gaffer were looking at a piece of paper that told them the identity of the 'fourth man' – formerly known as 'H'.

But viewers had to wait more tense minutes to learn who it was.

They cued us up for a big surprise. “… come off it, no way!” said Kate, while an equally bamboozled Steve said: “This can't be right”, and the Gaffer looked shaken (again).

And yet… viewers weren't about to have it handed to them on the plate. Oh no, AC-12 have been on this for years – and viewers for six seasons – the reveal would be slow to arrive.

Here we look at the big moments in the dramatic finale…

BALACLAVAS, SHOOT-OUT, WILL STEVE LIVE?!

When occupational health took away his licence to carry firearms, viewers feared that Steve's days were numbered.

Especially when moments later he was in a shoot out with OCG's in balaclavas. But phew. Steve lives to fight another day … and another series?

QUIET CHLOE CRACKS THE CASE

New recruit Chloe has been very much a background figure, leaving some viewers to wonder if she's 'H' – or indeed, if she was the daughter of the first series bent copper, Tony Gates.

But show writer Jed Mercurio has been quick to shut that theory down – as if a junior officer could be a criminal mastermind!

Instead, in the finale we saw how she pulled it out the bag and identified the fourth man with good old fashioned police work, and the incorrect spelling of the word 'Definately'. NOTE to wannabee OCG: spellcheck!

THE 'FOURTH MAN' WAS UNDER THEIR NOSE (AND OURS) THE WHOLE TIME

As Chloe showed the three amigos her concrete evidence of the identity of the fourth man, it was not only a shock, but frankly made AC-12 look like a trio of chumps.

Viewers also smacked their forehead at how they missed these MASSIVE clues…

NOT HIM!

As the prime suspect walked in to the AC-12 interview room, the camera scanned up his body to show… DS Ian Buckells. WHAT?!

A man who Kate described as: “Always wearing the same crap suits, dad cars, and never puts hand in pocket when it's your round.”

But let's back up – Kate worked with him three times! As Buckells pointed out: “I made total mugs out of you lot.”

WHAT AC-12 (WE) MISSED

Buckells was part of an undercover team from the first series with Tony Gates (DECEASED in 'the line of duty' but bribed into working for the OCG), DCI Roz Huntley (yep, corrupt) and of course on the Hill with Jo Davidson (coerced in to corruption).

Why didn't anyone spot that he had a big house in the country, flash cars and an account in the Cayman islands?

Of course there is still one more theory.

Buckells may be the last man standing, but in his interrogation, he played down his role as little more than "I just pass on the orders".

Maybe he isn't the fourth man. And if he isn't, we know what that means. The writers and stars have teased that they will come back for another series if there is more to tell… sounds like AC-12 isn't over just yet!
