CORONATION Street's Leanne Battersby is left guilt-ridden when she lies to an old friend about son Oliver's illness.
Leanne and Steve McDonald's world came crashing down when their son was diagnosed with an incurable form of mitochondrial disease.
Leanne (Jane Danson) is facing her son's inevitable death, and though she has been trying to stabilise her emotions for Oliver's sake when a friend from her past asks how she is, she fails to be honest.
She bumps into a fellow mum from her pregnancy group and when they ask after Oliver, Leanne makes out that he’s fine.
But when her friend heads off, Leanne is overwhelmed with grief and guilt.
Later, Toyah (Georgia Taylor) finds her at home in tears, and Leanne tells her what happened and says she’s ashamed of herself for lying.
The incurable form of mitochondrial disease will eventually take Oliver’s life.
Soap boss Ian MacLeod said of the storyline: “This is a story about a family coming to terms with the most difficult news anyone can face and the ways in which this strengthens and shatters relationships in unpredictable ways.
“We want to do justice to the stories of the many thousands of families who have to deal with diagnoses similar to Oliver’s, be it a mitochondrial disorder or another life-limiting condition."
Toyah and Imran put their fostering plans on hold as the news of Oliver’s illness reached them.
Imran tentatively mentioned his and Toyah’s fostering plans to Nick and admitted they’ve put everything on hold so as not to upset Leanne.
But with Nick’s encouragement, Toyah eventually broached the subject with her sister.
Leanne admitted it’s bad timing but tells Toyah she has to go for it and that she has her blessing.
Coronation Street continues tonight at 7.30pm.
