Call the Midwife star emotional over huge career news as BBC pays tribute

Call the Midwife fans have been celebrating after fan favourite Daniel Laurie has been nominated for Best Actior in this year's TV Choice Awards.

The star plays the role of Reggie Jackson in the popular BBC show.

The show posted on their official Facebook page to say they are "thrilled" by the "incredible news" that Daniel has been nominated.

The actor also responded to the news, saying the nomination makes him "feel alive."

Daniel has appeared in Call the Midwife since 2017, playing the kind-hearted and trusting Reggie.

Both the actor and his character have Down's Syndrome – the show's creator Heidi Thomas was partly inspired to introduce Reggie in series six by her brother David who also had the condition but sadly died young.

Kind-hearted Reggie was first introduced back in 2017 after tragedy struck.

He was living with his elderly mother until she suffered a fatal heart attack at church. Luckily his distant cousin Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi) and his wife Violet (Annabelle Apsion) stepped in to look after Reggie as their own son.

As Reggie has Down's syndrome he was given a permanent place at the Glasshouse Trust, a care facility with a community of young adults with disabilities, and he regularly visits his family and friends in Poplar.

Reacting to his nomination, Daniel said: "Thank you to everyone for voting for me – it is an awesome honour. It makes me feel alive."

His family have also commented saying that they are "overwhelmed" by the news.

In their announcement, the show wrote: "We hope by now you've heard the wonderful news that Daniel Laurie, who plays Reggie, has been nominated in the prestigious Best Actor category at this year's TV Choice Awards.

"We were SO THRILLED at this recognition…

"Feeling alive. Feeling recognised and appreciated for who we are and what we do.

"Isn't that what we all deserve? Isn't that what our drama is all about?"

Daniel is up against Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Ben Whishaw (This is Going to Hurt) and Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders).

Reacting to Daniel's nomination, one fan wrote: "I just voted for you in the final round too, because your smile is contagious. Seeing you happy on screen makes me happy, so thank you for that."

Another added: "Hoping you win Danny. I so enjoy the episodes in which you play such a lovely character and I bet you are a stunner in real life."

A third said: "Everyone vote Daniel Laurie best actor xx."
