Big Little Lies Season 2 picks up with the start of the next school year. However, coming back to the school for the first time since “that night” unleashes unwanted memories for some of the women. How are ‘The Monterey Five’ doing in the aftermath of Perry Wright’s death?
** SPOILER ALERT ** This article contains information revealed in the Big Little Lies Season 2 premiere.
Bonnie, the one who ultimately pushed Perry Wright to his death, is having the hardest time dealing with his death. When Big Little Lies Season 2 started, she isn’t talking to her daughter or husband, Nathan. She also went on a run, had several flashbacks of that night. Nathan told his ex-wife and her husband, Madeline and Ed, about his situation because he wanted help.
Nathan talked to Ed at a cafe and asked him to take Bonnie out and speak to her because he’s good with words. The conversation didn’t end well, with Nathan walking away, calling Ed “snide” several times. However, Madeline had better luck with Bonnie.
She went over to Bonnie’s house, and Bonnie admitted to Madeline she’s angry with herself. Bonnie also told her the other ladies hadn’t been so inviting, so she doesn’t have anyone to talk to about the situation. Before Madeline can extend an invitation to Bonnie, Nathan interrupts the conversation and Bonnie goes back upstairs.
Big Little Lies Season 2 started with Celeste having several dreams and nightmares about her late husband that range from loving memories to their abusive relationship. She talked to her therapist about the nightmares she’s having and admits she does take responsibility for what happened to him that night.
Celeste’s mother-in-law, Mary Louise Wright, played by Meryl Streep, comes to stay with her to help out with her deceased husband’s sons. She is so filled with anger and confusion over the death of her son that she ends up literally screaming at the dinner table. However, Mary-Louise helps immensely with the twins.
Jane hasn’t cashed any of the checks that have come from Perry’s death, even though Celeste urges her to do so. She also has daydreams of Perry, but none as intense as the other women.
Jane’s coworker referred to her as “The Monterey Five,” and the ladies became paranoid about how others perceived them in their small town.
Madeline doesn’t think about Perry at all, primarily because she’s too pre-occupied with everyone else. Her daughter, Abigail, refuses to go to college. Instead, she wants to join a startup that builds houses for homeless people. Her decision outraged Madeline, and she told Abigail that she needed to go to college so she can do something with her life.
Madeline also had an awkward first meeting with Mary Louise because Mary Louise told her that she looked like a “wanter.” Madeline saw Mary Louise at her job and decided to confront her about her words. Mary Louise admitted Madeline reminded of her an ex-friend that wronged her because they are both short with bubbly personalities.
Renata is not shown much in the Big Little Lies Season 2 premiere. In the one glimpse viewers caught of her life post-Perry’s death, she was doing a photo shoot outside by her pool. Her husband came downstairs and asked her what she’s doing, before going back in a room where he drunkenly played with a model train and railroad set.
