I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here 2020 is going to be filmed in Wales rather than Australia, but if hosts Ant and Dec had their way it would be taking place in the north of England.
The Geordie presenting duo, both 44, have revealed that they campaigned to have this year’s series held nearer their home town after the coronavirus pandemic meant it couldn’t be held in Australia.
Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have lived in London for over 20 years to be in the capital for work, but were excited at the prospect of filming near to their friends and family.
Dec told The Sun: ‘I said we should put them all on Holy Island, let’s all go to Lindisfarne [castle], get them all there.’
Ant added: ‘You’ve got Warkworth castle, we pitched a lot of castles – we tried.’
Producers eventually decided on Gwyrch Castle in Abergele, Wales for this year’s show, after ongoing restrictions and quarantine rules meant getting the cohort of celebrities and production crew to Australia amid the pandemic would have been unfeasible.
Ant told Steve and Karen’s Breakfast Show on TFM that they are looking forward to the unusual version of the show this year.
He explained: ‘There is going to be a real curiosity for what it’s going to be like, from us more than anybody.
‘It’s going to be fun, everybody loves I’m a Celebrity and we are used to it being one way and we are doing it a different way – let’s see what happens.’
He also teased that the cast taking part would be popular, adding: ‘The casting is looking really strong at the moment, the celebs will be really good, they’ll be up for it.
‘We live in a different world this year than we normally do, so everybody kind of understands the reasons why, we just can’t wait to get going.’
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here returns to ITV later this year.
