Christian Eriksen next club odds: Newcastle price slashed to sign Brentford ace, Spurs return 5/1, Man Utd 10/1

BRENTFORD are still in pole position to secure the signing of Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen, but bookmakers claim Newcastle are breathing down their necks.

Betfair have the west London side as 2/1 favourites, marginally ahead of the the Magpies at 5/2 – slashed down from 12/1. Tottenham and Manchester United are also thought to be keeping tabs on the situation.

The Denmark international has impressed in his five appearances since joining the Bees on a sixth-month contract in January, including a goal at Stamford Bridge in a 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea.

It was just his fourth appearance back in football since the midfielder collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match in June 2021.

The Dane was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, which Serie A do not permit, so his contract with Inter Milan was consequently terminated.

A run of four wins in five games since Eriksen's first start has seen Brentford's place in next season's Premier League look pretty secure, increasing the likelihood of the 30-year-old staying in west London.

  • Brentford 2/1
  • Newcastle 5/2
  • Tottenham 5/1
  • Manchester United 10/1

Newcastle are also deemed to be impressed by Eriksen's fightback to form and have taken a liking to the idea of the Dane donning their black and white stripes next season.

Over the past week, Betfair's odds have slashed from 12/1 down to 5/2 for Newcastle to seal the signing of Eriksen.

There's also talk of a return to Tottenham, where the attacking midfielder spent six-and-a-half years before the current Spurs boss Antonio Conte bought him while manager of Inter Milan.

Eriksen made more than 300 appearances for Tottenham, grabbing 69 goals and 90 assists.

Manchester United had been linked with Christian Eriksen even throughout his Tottenham days, and the Red Devils still like the look of him, according to Betfair.

Eriksen was linked with a move to Ajax when news emerged that he would no longer be allowed to play for Inter Milan. The Ajax boss, Erik ten Hag, now looks likely to take over at Manchester United for the start of next season, resulting in the report of interest.

Another name linked to the Manchester United job has been Mauricio Pochettino, with whom the pair enjoyed great success together during their days at Tottenham.
