Bowens Film Room: Week 16 fantasy football upgrades and downgrades

    Former NFL safety Matt Bowen is a veteran of four teams over seven seasons, and now provides analysis for ESPN Insider.

With the fantasy semifinals up this weekend, let’s take a deeper look at our rosters. I’m talking about matchups here. Scheme trends that can help us out. And the offensive structure we need to get production from our WR2/3s, the flex plays and the borderline QB1s in 12- and 14-team leagues.

This week, I’ve identified eight players. There’s a wide receiver back in the mix for one of the NFL’s top offenses. A timing-and-rhythm thrower in a matchup versus a thin secondary. And a tight end who is producing numbers despite playing in a run-heavy offense. Plus, there are players I’m downgrading, too, based on what I’m seeing on the tape.

Players to upgrade

Odell Beckham Jr., WR, Los Angeles Rams

After posting 19 or more PPR points twice in Weeks 12-14, with a touchdown grab in all three games during that stretch, OBJ checked in with just 1.7 PPR points on Tuesday night versus Seattle. So, why upgrade him here? It’s the matchup.
