Rare Kew Gardens 50p coin sells for £136 – and theres thousands out there

A rare coin has sold for a fortune on eBay – and you could have one in your wallet.

The Kew Gardens 50p coin is popular among collectors with the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden.

Royal Mint said about 210,000 coins were made after it released the limited edition in 2009 to mark 250 since the opening.

According to its listing, the "Kew Gardens 50p genuine 2009 circulated coin Good Condition 50p rare" had a starting price of 99p.

And following a 21-way bidding war, the price jumped with one seller nabbing it for £136, plus £2.35 for packaging and postage.

This particular coin was sold for a below average price, according to Coin Hunter's estimates.

However, there have been examples of this coin selling for as much as £200 in the past.

If you find a Kew Gardens 50p coin in your change soon, the first thing you should do is check the date on it.

Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p – and this version doesn't tend to sell for as much.

Previously, a rare £1 coin with an error sold for a fortune on eBay.

The coin is a copy of the new British pound which entered circulation in 2017, but a design error meant that it was worth a fortune.

It is supposed to have a gold coloured outer-rim (nickel-brass) and a silver coloured middle (nickel-plated alloy).
