Prince Charles‘ upbringing was quite different from Prince William and Prince Harry‘s. Princess Diana specifically tried to make sure the boys knew a life outside palace walls and how to be independent in many ways.
Their father grew up with little exposure away from the palace and had just about everything done for him his entire life. So when Charles mocked Harry for doing something himself, the younger prince responded with an angry dig at his dad.
Prince Charles doesn’t do anything himself
Several former palace aides have spoken out over the years about how Charles does not and never has done anything for himself.
Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell shared that the future king’s staffers at Clarence House call him “the pampered prince” behind his back because he won’t perform a single task.
Reporter Clive Goodman agreed and in the documentary Royal Servants said: “The Prince of Wales, he doesn’t lift a thing. He gets up in the morning, his bathrobe is there waiting for him; he walks into the bathroom, the bath is drawn for him already. Even when he gets out of the bath, the towel is folded in a special way so he just has to sit in it and wrap it around himself.”
Prince Charles mocked his son for this before Prince Harry shot back
Over the years, it appeared that the Duke of Cornwall’s sons don’t mind doing menial tasks as they have never surrounded themselves with as many aides and valets as Charles has. Footage from Royal Servants showed that to be true when Harry did something and Charles mocked him for it.
In the 2011 documentary, a teenage Harry is seen brushing a pair of muddy boots at a polo match and being laughed at by Prince Charles. Harry was clearly annoyed by this and took a dig at his dad by saying, “What? I always clean them. I played yesterday, I didn’t have a chance. Just because you’d get someone else to do it for you.”
“His dig at his father was, ‘at least I’m cleaning it myself, not like you,’” Goodman explained. “And that was exactly right, Charles would never, ever, ever think of cleaning his own shoes. By the time he was [his son’s] age, he had a valet, a private secretary, a driver — he had a pretty substantial staff all of his own.”
There have been other reports of Harry lashing out at his father
This isn’t the first time reports have surfaced about Prince Harry standing up to his father but another instance was over a more serious matter when Harry was even younger.
According to Princess Diana’s biographer, Andrew Morton, Prince Harry lashed out at his dad when Charles and Diana were arguing. Morton claimed that Harry got so mad about what was going on between his folks that he took his anger out on his dad.
The Express noted that Morton’s wrote in his book William and Catherine: Their Lives, Their Wedding that his parents’ constant bickering was so upsetting to Harry that he “launched an attack on his father, ineffectually beating him on the legs with his fists.”
Morton also said that the young prince yelled at Charles and told him, “I hate you, I hate you, you make Mummy cry.”
