Married At First Sight UK viewers have lambasted a groom as ‘controlling and creepy’ after he delivered ‘the most awkward speech ever’ filled with ‘terrible jokes’ at the expense of his wife.

On the E4 programme tonight, Franky, 47, who has spent the last 16 years living in Dubai, wed personal trainer and mother-of-two Marilyse, 37, from Yorkshire.

But while sparks appeared to fly when the two strangers met for the first time at the altar, the big day quickly became awkward during the groom’s toast at the reception.

Franky, a strength and conditioning coach, started his speech – which viewers criticised and noted went ‘down like a lead balloon’ – by mocking his bride.

He said: ‘Ladies and gentleman, I will actually enjoy this speech because it’s highly likely again that I will get to speak for a whole ten minutes without my wife interrupting me.’

On the E4 programme tonight, Franky (pictured with his wife), 47, who has spent the last 16 years living in Dubai, wed personal trainer and mother-of-two Marilyse, 37, from Yorkshire

The groom continued: ‘The perfect marriage is about the growth within the relationship and overcoming the obstacles together. You got that, yeah?

‘Thank you in advance that on our honeymoon you’ll get up every morning and make me breakfast. I like my eggs runny,’ he told his bride.

However, his wife and guests didn’t appear to find his jokes funny – with viewers agreeing that they lacked humour.

But while sparks appeared to fly when the two strangers met for the first time at the altar, the big day quickly became awkward during the groom’s toast at the reception – which viewers (pictured) called ‘terrible’

One person wrote: ‘This is the most awkward speech ever,’ while another said on Twitter: ‘Franky gives me the creeps. I see him as controlling, the “I’m in charge” type.’

A third added: ‘Did he just pat his mum like a dog and call her a good girl? His speech is going down like a lead balloon’

Franky said he signed up for Married At First Sight for the ‘challenge’.

‘All my life has been about challenges. I don’t like to do the normal. If anything is normal then I find it boring. I’m not captured unless I’m entertained and challenged,’ he said.

Meanwhile, Marilyse explained: ‘I would love to go through to the experiment to the very end and still be with the guy. That is what I want to happen and what I expect to happen.’

Elsewhere on tonight’s episode, Joshua, 26, from West London, was seen nervously waiting for his soon-to-be wife to walk down the aisle after admitting that if his bride took too long to appear his nerves would get the better of him and he’d ‘hide somewhere’.

He admitted: ‘Hopefully she doesn’t take too long, then the nerves haven’t got enough time to brew… If I think about things too much, you probably won’t even see me. I’ll be hiding somewhere.’

Joshua, an insurance worker, was paired up with sports journalist Amy, 34, from Cornwall, on the show.

In the programme, Joshua was captured waiting in front of the couple’s family and friends for his bride to arrive.

‘I am s******* myself, I’ll be honest,’ he confessed. ‘It is a bit overwhelming. It’s all happened so fast.

‘I was somebody that was a bit sceptical about marriage as a whole. Most certainly didn’t think I’d be standing at the altar any time soon.’

However, he added: ‘I’ve completed the single life so there’s no going back now. I’m 100 per cent in it.’

But it was clear the groom was concerned, continuing: ‘Hopefully she doesn’t take too long, then the nerves haven’t got enough time to brew.

‘I just tend to overthink things when I’m waiting around because I’m impatient. All sorts just go around in my head, if I think about things too much. You probably won’t even see me. I’ll be hiding somewhere.’

Joshua said he signed up to Married At First Sight because he wanted a ‘fast track’ into getting hitched.

‘I think marriage has always been on my cards, but I could never see myself getting on one knee, so this is a fast track,’ he said.

‘Sometimes I need to be kicked into the deep end so for me this is the start of a new chapter.’

Bride Amy said: ‘With Married At First Sight UK, either I’m going to find the love of my life or I’m going to learn a really big lesson from it, which might lead me to the love of my life.’
