Manhunt for white van driver after Uber Eats rider killed in ‘road rage attack’

An Uber Eats and Deliveroo rider was stabbed to death by the driver of a white van during a "spontaneous" road rage incident, say murder detectives.

Police have launched a manhunt for a suspect after Takieddine Boudhane, 30, was killed at a busy junction in Finsbury Park, north London, on Friday evening.

The victim of London's first murder of 2020 was riding a motorcycle when he got into an altercation with a driver at about 6.50pm.

Metropolitan Police say the suspect was driving a VW Caddy panel van, which left the scene but was found abandoned in Islington, the borough where the stabbing took place, on Sunday morning.

Mr Boudhane was an Algerian national who had lived in the UK for about three years.

Paramedics battled to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene about 50 minutes after being stabbed.

He was with another man, who was also riding a motorcycle, when he was stabbed.

That man left the scene, but has since been traced and spoken to by officers.

Police, who have launched a murder investigation, said it is "very likely" that the fight would have been witnessed by passersby.

At least part of the attack may have been captured on video, the force added.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil John said: "The investigation is making good progress, but I am still appealing for anyone with information, and witnesses who have yet to speak with police, to come forward and share anything they know or tell us what they saw.

"This is a busy thoroughfare and it is very likely that members of the public would have seen a fight in the road which they may also have captured on their phones.

“It would appear that an altercation took place at the junction of Lennox Road with Charteris Road between the victim, who was riding a motorcycle, and the driver of a van.

“The vehicle was a white VW Caddy panel type van which was located and recovered by police in Islington on the morning of Sunday, 5 January.

"It has been removed to a police compound where a full forensic examination will be undertaken.

“The driver and person believed responsible for this tragic matter is now the subject of a police manhunt.

"At this time I am unable to release any further information concerning the identity of the driver as this may hinder the ongoing police investigation.

"The incident itself appears to have been spontaneous and not connected to, or as a result of, anything other than a traffic altercation.”

Finsbury Park Mosque had previously paid tribute to the "young man who worked hard to earn his living".

Friends also spoke of their heartbreak, saying he was a "good man" who was "lovely" and "friendly".

Local MP Jeremy Corbyn visited the scene on Saturday to speak to delivery drivers who knew Mr Boudhane and said they had been attacked on the job previously.

Mr Corbyn called for better protection for delivery drivers, saying: "Delivery drivers do a great job in London all of the time. Yet they are vulnerable."
