Kate Middleton has worn this exact chignon since 2011 – and always pairs it with a hat

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out yesterday looking like a vision in a bold pink outfit. Though her dress was certainly eye-catching, we couldn’t help but notice just how fabulous her hair looked – and how familiar it seemed.

It got us thinking, Kate definitely has a certain style of bun that she always returns to, and that she always pairs with a hat, a fascinator or an accessory. This bun isn’t just your standard “pull together at the nape of your neck”, it has more of a knot-like effect. Very fancy, and very handy for making sure there are absolutely no fly-away hairs.

This exact chignon is one that Kate always returns to for official events, and the Duchess has been wearing it now since 2011, shortly after her wedding.

So, in honour of Kate and her royal bun, we’re taking a look back at the top five instances when she wore the chic chignon, and the beauty looks she paired it with…

2020 – Petal perfect

Kate was a true British rose back in 2020 at the Commonwealth Day service when she paired a deep red shade of hat, covered in rose detailing, with a bun that mimicked the petals of the flower. This chignon was placed slightly to the left of her neck, meaning it was visible from the front as well as the back.

2019 – Ready to parade

For Trooping The Colour, the Queen's annual birthday parade in June, Kate recreated her signature side bun. She paired it with a statement pastel yellow hat, which matched perfectly with her ensemble.

Again, she cleverly placed the bun slightly to the left of her neck so that it could be visible from all angles. We also love how she teamed the updo with spring-ready, glowing makeup.

2018 – Bold bands

For a celebration at Westminster Abbey in 2018, Kate switched out her usual headpiece for a chunky velvet Alice band – and we loved it. She did, however, keep her hair styled into her go-to bun. We love how she updated the look slightly by crisscrossing the face-framing hair pieces over the band and across the back of her head.

2015 – Lover’s knot

Kate attended the annual Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace in 2015, and made quite the impact with her hair and her accessories. Again, she turned to her trusty knot-like bun, but instead of a headpiece she finished the style with a tiara.

This wasn’t just any tiara, it was the Lover’s Knot tiara, worn famously by Princess Diana. We hope Kate wore her knot bun in homage to the name of the tiara, and that it wasn’t just a coincidence.

2011 – Bridal beauty

Less than two months after her wedding to Prince William in 2011, Kate showed off THE bun for one of the first instances. This specific variation was slightly more “undone” than what the chignon eventually evolved into, but it was nonetheless very effective – especially when teamed with the neutral fascinator.
