It takes me an hour to orgasm – is this a side effect of getting old?

DEAR DEIDRE: DESPITE having the sex drive of a 25-year-old, it takes me ages to ejaculate.

I’m 49 years old and it can take me up to an hour to climax – by which time my wife’s either given up or has begun moaning that she’s bored.

I have no trouble getting an erection, so I don’t think there’s anything wrong there.

Is this just a side effect of getting old, and something I’ll have to put up with?

DEIDRE SAYS: Changes to your sexual performance are a normal part of ageing.

Older men often find it takes longer to get aroused or to develop an erection, and some feel their orgasms are less powerful.

You might need more stimulation, so maybe try a sex toy. My support pack Man Who Can’t Climax? has other suggestions too.

But also have your GP check that there is no underlying health reason – for example, an enlarged prostate gland can lead to erection and ejaculation problems.
