Shoppers in all major supermarket chains have been given a cause for optimism due to the fact current government rules surrounding coronavirus restrictions in shops could be set to change.

Currently, all customers in shops such as Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Lidl are all required by law to wear a face covering when inside the store (unless you have a medical condition making you exempt from wearing a mask) as well as ensuring you remain socially distant from all other customers at all times.

However, according to reports the government are analysing the possibility of these rules being relaxed or even lifted entirely.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's lockdown exit road map, made public last week, explained that the government is aiming to gradually ease all lockdown measures before lifting them entirely and restoring normality on June 21.

Supermarkets are one of the few businesses that remained open throughout the entirety of the pandemic, though they were forced to implement a number of Covid-safe measures to protect both their staff and customers.

Everything from limiting the number of people allowed in the store to face masks, queuing and stockpiling control measures all being introduced over the last 12 months.

Kent Live have reported that paragraph 145 of the Government's 68-page COVID 19 response outlines the next stages in detail.

It says: “Social distancing is difficult and damaging for businesses and, as a result, it is important to return to as near to normal as quickly as possible.”

“Ahead of Step 4, as more is understood about the impact of vaccines on transmission and a far greater proportion of the population has been vaccinated, the Government will complete a review of social distancing measures and other long-term measures that have been put in place to limit transmission.

“The results of the review will help inform decisions on the timing and circumstances under which rules on 1m+, face masks and other measures may be lifted.

“The review will also inform guidance on working from home – people should continue to work from home where they can until this review is complete.”
