Brooke Shields’ personal trainer is confident the model will be back in the gym when she’s fully recovered from her broken femur.
Ngo Okafor, who was with Shields during her ill-fated balance board workout in January that left her severely injured, told Page Six that she’s a “fighter” who has been through much worse than a broken leg.
“We speak regularly. She’s a fighter. She hasn’t broken her leg before, but she’s been through tougher things in her life,” Okafor shared.
“Brooke was a baby model. To go through life in the public eye, the breaking of leg is, yes, physically catastrophic, but she’s seen way more s–t than this.”
Shields’ injuries took a dramatic turn when she faced a harrowing staph infection after receiving three blood transfusions and had several rods inserted into her leg. Doctors feared the infection was caused by MRSA, a type of bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics.
“Thank God it wasn’t,” Shields, 55, told People. “If it had been, my doctor said it would have been a race against time. That’s how you can become septic. It seemed unthinkable.”
Okafor keeps in frequent contact with Shields, who is spending time in Florida with her family.
“I knew she would be fine, but I check in on her every other day just to see how she’s doing,” he said. “I give her a little pep talk every now and then. That’s my strength. I always believe that everything happens for a reason and we will be fine.”
When she returns to the gym, Okafor plans to focus on strengthening her glutes and hips for stability.
“We’ll start out very simple, a lot of band work, stability, standing just on one leg, shifting her weight from one leg to another,” he explained. “We’ll do a lot of upper body strengthening work, a lot of core work. That’s going to be huge.”
Okafor estimates it’ll take the “Suddenly Susan” actress, who had knee issues prior to her accident, about three months to get her strength back to where it was pre-accident.
