Speaking to press including Express.co.uk, James May, 58, said he doesn’t see his The Grand Tour pals Jeremy Clarkson, 61, and Richard Hammond, 51, as best friends, but loves the dynamic that they have. His colleagues are often seen pulling pranks on him, which he said he actually enjoys most of the time.

Ahead of their new lockdown special series, James joked: “We all hate each other really.”

He added of their friendship: “First and foremost, we are work colleagues, we work together.

“There is a rapport obviously, it wouldn’t work if you didn’t have that.

“But, we’re not friends as in you’re friends with your old school mates, your gang you’ve grown up with for many years.”

The car enthusiast went on to point out that they had essentially grown up together as they were “fresh-faced brown-haired boys” when they first met.

“I suppose it’s a little bit like being a politician, being on two sides of the house,” he added of their friendship.

“There are people that you like arguing with and like having them there for the purposes of interaction and debate and stimulation, it’s that rather than, ‘Let’s go for a pint together and play Dominos’.

“I like seeing the other two because they wind me up.”

The trio first rose to fame on Top Gear back in 2003 up until their departure in 2015.

The following year, the car enthusiasts began fronting Amazon’s The Grand Tour.

In their new episodes, viewers will see the squad heading to the Outer Hebrides for one of their toughest challenges yet.

On the ancient streets of Edinburgh, they also enjoy a hilarious, tyre torturing, high octane showdown on the racetrack.

This time around, Jeremy and Richard played a prank on James by filling up his caravan with water.

The pair were left in hysterics after James got drenched and fell to the floor after opening it up.

“I don’t quite know how they did it because I didn’t have the door on the caravan, which is quite a flimsy thing,” he recalled.

“I don’t know how we stood that much pressure. Top marks for ingenuity.”

On whether he will get revenge on his co-stars, he said: “I might do it long after we’ve all retired.

“I might go and burn down Richard Hammond’s Lake District house or something.”

He added of retiring: “I’ve got a few things left to do. It probably won’t be for another 10 years let’s be honest.”

The Grand Tour Presents… Lochdown will arrive on Amazon Prime Video on July 30.
