Rod Stewart is still using crutches six months after his surgery on his knee and ankle. The singing legend, 76, appeared to be in high spirits as he didn’t allow being on crutches, while watching his ten-year-old son Aiden’s football match in Essex on Sunday, to dampen his mood.

The Maggie May hitmaker was pictured sporting an ankle boot paired with crutches as he headed to the pitch to cheer on his son.

The singer, who is a massive Celtic fan, had surgery last year to straighten out the bones in his lower leg, which he injured through years of playing football.

Rod later underwent an £8,000 ankle operation and a full knee replacement after years of playing football took a toll on his body.

The rock singer previously revealed he had been hurt ever since his 15-year-old son Alastair tackled him during a game.

Despite Rod hobbling to the sidelines for his youngest son’s football match, he immersed himself into the game.

The father-of-eight was able to rest his foot, which was in a plastic boot, as he sat in a fold-up chair during the game.

Penny Lancaster’s husband could be seen shouting from the sidelines as he watched the game unfold.

In pictures obtained by the MailOnline, Rod sported a full-length padded coat that had the Celtic logo emblazoned on the front.

Rod has become known for his support for the Glasgow-based football club Celtic FC over the years.

The singer has since claimed that his “football days are over” in a candid interview.

Rod told The Scottish Sun: “My football days are over.

“I have a bad ankle injury which I suffered from being tackled by my 15-year-old son.

“I can still kick a ball when needed though.”

Rod had gone under the knife last October just months after a successful knee replacement operation and still occasionally uses crutches.

His other half recently gave an update on her beau’s recovery during an interview on Lorraine.

Penny explained: “He had knee surgery, that was fantastic. He got over that quickly.

“The ankle surgery is taking a little bit longer, but he’ll be back.”

Speaking ahead of his operation, Rod remarked: “My knee got fixed with a replacement then the ankle didn’t know what was going on. So I’ve had to have an ankle fusion.

“When this is all done I should have a nice straight leg.”

He added: “I played football all of my life. I’m suffering from it now.”
