Queen Elizabeth II may have stripped Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their HRH titles in response to #Megxit, but she apparently contemplated giving them an even worse punishment: Earl and Countess titles!
That’s right, Perezcious royal fans. According to the Evening Standard, Her Majesty and Prince Charles debated stripping Harry and Meg of their Duke and Duchess of Sussex rank. However, it’s said they decided to let the couple keep the titles to avoid looking “petty.”
An insider told the outlet:
“The Sussex title is one of the ancient royal dukedoms given to him ahead of his wedding to Meghan, along with other titles. Removing it was seriously considered and discussed at the highest level.”
If this prized title was stripped, Harry and Meg would be referred to as the Earl and Countess of Dumbarton (ouch), downgrading them to the same ranking as Edward and Sophie, Earl and Countess of Wessex. But the source explained the Queen and Charles ultimately felt that preventing Archie Harrison’s parents from using “HRH” in public and for commercial use while still retaining the title was more appropriate.
These new claims come a day after Harry admitted he was “taking a leap of faith” in stepping back from the British monarchy but felt “there was really no other option.” In his first appearance since the Megxit deal was finalized, the 35-year-old told a charity audience:
“Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. I want you to hear the truth from me as much as I can share… Not as a prince, or a duke, but as Harry the same person that many of you have watched grow up over the last 35 years — but with a clearer perspective. The UK is my home and a place I love. That will never change.”
The Duke plans to spend the majority of his time in Canada, where he is expected to fly within the next few days and stay for the foreseeable future with his 38-year-old wife and son.
As we reported, the Queen shared an official statement regarding Harry and Meg’s new roles over the weekend, writing:
“They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties. With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty… The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home. Buckingham Palace does not comment on the details of security arrangements. There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly-funded security.”
Wow. So much power and privilege gone — just like that.
But clearly, it could’ve been worse!
