Kate Garraway got emotional as she shared an update on her husband Derek Draper’s condition as he continues on his journey to recover from COVID-19.
The 54 year old’s husband was one of the first British celebrities publicly diagnosed as contracting the virus in March 2020, and he endured a series of complications in hospital as well as being put in an induced coma.
Derek is now home with his wife and children Darcey, 15, and William, 12, but he remains on a long road.
Before the Good Morning Britain star was due to pay tribute to the NHS nurses and the unimaginable battle they’ve endured throughout the COVID-19 pandemic during The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards ceremony, she was asked about her husband’s condition.
Friend and Channel 4 host Davina McCall asked: "Kate, I would love to ask on behalf of all of us – how is Derek doing?"
Taken-aback by the question, the journalist fought back the tears in her reply: “He’s had a good day today.
“We did some exercises together before I came out.
"A day at a time, but today’s a good day.”
The star then smiled and thanked her longtime friend, adding: “That’s really kind of you.”
Kate also paid tribute to the nurses who have taken care of and looked after patients during the most gruelling period of our lifetimes.
“I’m here to talk about nurses,” she said with a smile. “I mean, where do you begin, there is absolutely no doubt that everything nurses do every day is utterly breath-taking.
"But sometimes it’s the little moments of thoughtfulness that make all the difference and it’s one of those that’s lead to tonight’s recipient being nominated."
The ceremony, which actually took place on Tuesday, is broadcast on Channel 4 Sunday night.
It comes as Kate picked up the trophy for Finding Derek in the best Authored Documentary category at the prestigious National Television Awards earlier this week.
The star gave an impassioned thank you speech, and revealed there could be part two in the works, as she goes forward as Derek’s 24-hour carer.
