John Whaite made the revelation on his Instagram Story on Wednesday, telling fans how his mum had accumulated an “astronomical phone bill”, to the point where the countless phone calls to the Strictly voting line had been suspected as fraudulent activity.

“My mum had her mobile phone account blocked because there was suspected fraud on her account,” the Great British Bake Off star explained.

“Turns out she’d just been voting for me on Strictly Come Dancing hundreds of times, wracking up an astronomical phone bill.”

Fortunately, the situation was resolved after John’s stepdad played the call centre clips of his dancing on Strictly in an effort to explain why their phone bill had skyrocketed in recent weeks.

“My stepdad rang the call centre to unblock it and had all the staff watching our dances on YouTube to explain the situation”.

Over the weekend, John found himself in the dangerous territory after being placed near the bottom of the leaderboard following his Salsa performance to We Are Family by Sister Sledge.

Strictly fans were outraged by the judges’ vote considering they had given the celebrity chef fairly positive feedback after his dance.

“We asked you to add some different content,” Shirley Ballas said of John’s dance with Strictly partner Johannes Radebe.

“You entertained, well done.”

Fellow judge Anton Du Beke echoed similar words by praising the pair’s rhythm and confidence.

“It was terrific, I loved the disco feel,” he gushed. “You came out without any inhibitions.”

Still, John and Johannes only ended up scoring one seven, two eights and a nine, totalling to 32 points.

One angered fan took to Twitter to vent about John’s disappointing score by calling the latest series a “fix”.

“JOHN AND JOHANNES UNDERMARKED! #strictly #fixed,” @hannlaysdown wrote.

Another fan, @TonyCoward8493, added: “If they score Dan higher than John i’ll riot. Dan could NEVER do what John just did. #Strictly.”

A third, @slinehan1, weighed in with their thoughts, sharing: “Yep! The judges are doing what they do so well.. undermarking!!! F**kin joke that was!! #john #strictly #StrictlyComeDancing #SCD.” (sic)

“I have a feeling it might be John and Dan in the dance off. I’d also like to say that Dan will finally be out but after Michelle Visage’s elimination in 2019, the judges might evict John.”

On Sunday’s results show, however, it was Dan Walker and his dance partner Nadiya Bychkova who were eliminated from the ballroom competition.

The pair just missed out on the semi-final after battling it out in the dance off against AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington.

But the BBC presenter remained in good spirits as he looked back on his long journey on the show before mentioning how happy he was to have made it as far as he did.

Speaking of his departure from Strictly, Dan said: “I’ll miss not going training with Nadiya today and learning a new dance and getting ready for the semi-final because that’s been sort of the rhythm of my week for the last three months, bizarrely.

“But I’m just happy that it happened in the first place, so that’s the way I’m looking at it.”

For Saturday’s show, the remaining Strictly contestants will take on two routines, with John and Johannes set to perform the jive to Coldplay’s Higher Power followed with a Couple’s Choice routine to Hometown Glory by Adele.
