Dame Emma Thompson has shared her view on the importance of intimacy coordinators on set after Sean Bean complained they ‘spoil the spontaneity’ of sex scenes.
The Lord of The Rings star, 63, had come under fire for questioning the need for intimacy coordinators, who are trained to ensure the well-being of actors during intimate scenes.
He had told The Times: ‘I should imagine it slows down the thrust of it. Ha, not the thrust, that’s the wrong word. It would spoil the spontaneity.
‘It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things. Somebody saying, “Do this, put your hand there, while you touch his thing…”
‘I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise.’
Dame Emma, 63, joked that Sean’s resistance to an intimacy coordinator might be down to him ‘accidentally’ having an intimacy coordinator at home.
She addressed their importance on set, telling Australian radio’s Fitzy & Wippa: ‘Intimacy coordinators are fantastically important and I don’t know [if] you were speaking to somebody who found it distracting but another conversation you might find people go, “It made me comfortable, it made me feel safe, it made me feel as though I was able to do this work.”
‘So intimacy coordinators are the most fantastic introduction in our work. And no, you can’t just “let it flow”.
‘There’s a camera there and a crew. You’re not on your own in a hotel room, you’re surrounded by a bunch of blokes, mostly. So it’s not a comfortable situation full stop.
